Author Details

  • Patrick Sherman is a pioneer in the drone industry, with more than a dozen years of operational experience flying small uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). An award-winning speaker, writer, and educator, Patrick is an Assistant Professor of the Practice at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide Campus, College of Aviation, Department of Flight. He shares his knowledge and insights around the world.
  • Recognized for his contributions with an individual Xcellence Award as the “Drone Instructor of the Year” by the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), he has been quoted in the New York Times and the Washington Post as a drone expert. He is a certified Level 3 Remote Pilot Instructor (RPI) through the AUVSI Trusted Operator Program (TOP) and a DronePro serving with the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team (FAAST). Patrick has logged more than 500 hours of UAS flight time.
  • Patrick is the author of more than 200 published articles about drones and their applications, which have appeared in magazines including RotorDrone Pro, Drone360, Drones, and Drone in the UK, as well as the International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace. For the past decade, he has also been a regular contributor to Model Aviation, as the author of the Advanced Flight Technology column, read by the more than 250,000 members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).
  • Patrick is also the author of several current and forthcoming books, including Drones: How They Fly, a STEM-education coloring book for children ages 6 to 9, and a co-author of Using Drone in Planning Practice, published by the American Planning Association in 2020. In addition to this volume, he is the lead author of Understanding Drones: Safety, Operations and Professionalism under development for publication by Aviation Supplies and Academics (ASA) in 2025.
  • A top-rated speaker, he has given presentations at events across the United States and around the world, including: CES, AUVSI Xponential, Commercial UAV Expo, InterDrone, the Drone World Expo, Drones Data X, the Drone User Group Network National Conference, the International Drone Expo, and AMA Expo West. In 2017, he was invited to the Middle East to speak at the Drones Oman conference in Muscat and to interview the deputy director of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) civil defense UAS program.
  • Always seeking opportunities to support the acceptance and growth of the drone industry, Patrick serves as the secretary of the AUVSI Cascade Chapter board of directors and the chair of its government affairs committee. He is also a founding member of the AMA’s sUAS Task Force and the Oregon State Legislature’s Drone Working Group. Patrick is a technical adviser to the DRONERESPONDERS public safety alliance, as well as an advisory committee member and brand ambassador for the AUVSI TOP program.
  • Known to fans worldwide as “Lucidity,” Patrick is the public face of the popular Roswell Flight Test Crew YouTube channel, which has more than 45,000 subscribers and more than 10 million video views. Sharing their adventures online since 2011, the crew promotes the safe, beneficial, and nonintrusive use of drone technology.
  • A master scuba instructor and licensed private pilot, he holds an undergraduate degree summa cum laude from the University of Southern California in sociology and English, as well as an MBA with honors from Willamette University. He also holds a Part 107 Remote Pilot-in-Command (RPIC) certificate and is a certified Level 2 Thermographer.
