Overview

Ranthane Aircraft Coatings

Ranthane requires three separate components (which are sold separately, see Options tab) that are mixed before application. All three components are required and cannot be substituted: Ranthane polyurethane paint, AU-2X1 Catalyst, and G-4200 Ranthane Thinner.

Mixing: Mix two parts Ranthane with one part AU-2X1 and stir. Allow to sit for 20 minutes induction time before use.

Thinning: For best results, thin 33%, then spray a vertical surface test area with a moderate coat to insure that the film has no orange peel and is not too runny.

Reviews

I used this on fiberglass tip tanks. The paint looks amazing, but I found that the manufactures directions to thin it 3:1 resulted in extreme runs, especially in cold temps. Using just a few ounces per qt worked best for me. Tips look beautiful. Also, the manufacturer was very responsive and helpful when I reached out. Price is much lower than other aircraft paints, considering the price for a full gallon. Im not a very experienced painter, so keep this in mind. Will purchase more soon. Recommended.

Q: Do I need to order the catalyst for ranthane separately?

Yes, the catalyst must be used, and is sold separately.

Q: Is it possible to add a flattening agent to the black in order to get a flat black coating?

Yes, you can use part number 09-02052 (pint) or 09-02051 (quart) for Ranthane paints.

Q: I have a Ranthane custom color formula from consolidated aircraft coatings. Can I order this from you or do I have to order from the factory?

We can mix the Ranthane to the formula given, but it is a special order item. Be sure the color is correct for your application, and we will mix to their formula. To begin the special order process, please call sales at 877-477-7823.

Q: Are the cans of Ranthane topcoat full, ie. a full gallon? Some paints are 3/4 full and consider it a full gallon when activator is added.

Ranthane is not short filled. Depending on the pigments needed for a specific color, the tinted base color is approximately one gallon.

Q: Is this Randolph Ranthane recommended for use on both fabric and metal surfaces?

Yes, it will work on both fabric and primed metal surfaces.

Q: What primer do you recommend for use with light colored Ranthane

Ranthane may be applied directly over fabric surfaces when the Rand-0-Fill silver butyrate has dried at least 36 hours. More drying time is better. Epoxy primer should dry for one week over metal or composite surfaces before applying Ranthane. If you are painting a light color you would use the white epoxy primer.

Q: What epoxy primer product should be used under Ranthane paint on a metal surface?

They recommend EP420 epoxy primer.

Q: Where do I find EP420 epoxy primer?

Try a keyword search for EP-420.

Q: If wanting to make a quart of pain how many ounces of part b, do I apply?

This is a 2:1 mix, so two parts Ranthane to one part catalyst.

Q: Regarding Ranthane, does Aircraft Spruce mix a base color with toners to get to the final color, or are the final colors mixed by the factory and sent to Aircraft Spruce?

We mix the paint in-house.
