MFR Model# MS MAGNETIC SHIELDING SHEET

Overview

Magnetic Shielding is an alloy containing approximately 80% nickel (Ni). Nickel has magnetic and magnetostrictive properties. In the soft or annealed state, the molecules in nickel will absorb magnetism much like a sponge absorb water --- restricting the flow and allowing no specific pattern to emerge. Use this .005 x 5 x 12 metal strip to shield the precision PAI-700 compass from magnetic interference in the instrument panel.

I have a Mooney which has a tube steel frame that causes significant magnetic deviation, as much as 60 degrees on some headings even after swinging the compass. I bought a sheet of this figuring I had nothing to lose and if it worked, it would be easier and cheaper than degaussing the plane. I wrapped this around the upright tube steel that runs up the middle of my windshield, where the compass is mounted, and places some on the top of the dash and it got my deviation down to a maximum 20 degrees and that was only on 1 heading. 2/3 of the compass is reading within 5 degrees now and the rest is within 10 degrees, minus that one heading. It may not work in all situations but, it made a big difference for me.

I purchased the Precision Aviation vertical compass, PAI-700, 14V, for my 1952 Cessna 170B. When I installed it on the top of the glare shield with the standard mount from PAI I was experiencing significant magnetic disruption/field from the turn coordinator that had been installed in my plane in the upper middle of the dash. I called Precision Aviation direct and they were wonderful with customer support and explaining the need for the magnetic compass shield (annealed nickel ferrite). I used a 4x6 index card as a template to determine how much of the nickel ferrite I would need to wrap around the turn coordinator. I used a tin snip to cut the right size (approximately 4.5 x 6.5) and carefully wrapped it around the turn coordinator and used electrical tape to wrap around the shield twice. It has worked well to eliminate the magnetic field that was disrupting the vertical compass.

This product worked for a customer of mine with an old Comanche. We tried everything else, including the compensation balls. I was about to recommend he have the airframe degaussed when I saw this product and decided to give it a chance. Glad I did!

Had a compass that was being impacted by a turn and bank indicator, but the shielding worked as advertised. Good stuff.

I was of the assumption that the Shield material is not magnetic. and could block a magnetic field And that does not seem to be a realistic assumption . Apparently I have some magnetized metal pieces within the airframe of the tube in fabric aircraft. and the only way Ill be able to fix that problem is to Demagnetized those magnetized areas.

Q: What are the dimensions of the shielding?

Dimensions are .005” x 5” x 12”.

Q: Do these instruments cause magnetic problems for a panel-mounted compass?: Transponder? Comm radio? Electric motor control unit for a self-launch glider motor?

Each instrument is different. This product is magnetic sheeting will shield instruments from potential magnetic problems.

Q: What are the dimensions of the sheets?
