Overview

The Daniels AFM8 is designed for most of the miniature and sub-miniature connector types that are so widely used in all types of electronic systems. Originally developed for the Air Force, the AFM8 meets the need for a miniature tool accommodating wire sizes 20 thru 32 AWG. The cycle controlled precision ratchet assures consistently accurate crimps every time. The tool has a built-in eight step selector knob for ease in dialing the correct crimp depth setting for the wire being used.

Does a great job. Kinda expensive for installing one piece of avionics.

Little Blue Crimper M22520/2-01

August 12, 2022

This review is in response to the review by James M. This tool is meant to be used with positioners. Do not try to use this tool without a positioner. There is no need to align the pin. The positioner is used to set the pin to the correct location and depth. Each positioner has a label that details the setting to be used for each wire size. At least for Garmin products, the install manual has a chart that details which positioner is used with each type of pin.

good tool

I have been making items for a startup that required connector pins that either need soldering or crimping. I was never able to get a good crimp with what I had and the solder version was almost $2 each more expensive. The matching crimp tool was over $400 on line. A fellow maker pointed me to this tool and had been using it successfully. I am able to crimp effectively each time. It has 3 prongs that come down over a round pin, so it does not tend to bend the pin like pliers do. You have to initially pre-check the location of the pin with respect to the face of the tool and crimp location to make sure it crimps in the right location along the pin, but otherwise is the perfect tool. Once you know the correct location for the pin you are using, you can get good crimps. My friend already knew the setting was 6, so I did not have to experiment on that setting.

Q: Does it come with the adapter?

No, the little blue crimper (11-04443) does not come with an adapter. Purchase part number 11-12211 for most aviation pins. Part number 11-12212 is for high density male pins used in some Garmin applications.

Q: Do the turrets for different wire sizes come with this tool or are they sold separately?

No, this does not come with the adapters. Purchase part number 11-12211 for most aviation pins. Part number 11-12212 is for high density male pins used in some Garmin applications.

Q: In addition to the adapters K13-1 and K42, do I need to purchase the DMC Turret Head Assembly and/or the Universal Head Assembly in order to use the Little Blue Crimper for typical Sub D and Garmin (high & low density) connector pins?

If you purchase the little blue crimper and the dies stated, that is all you need for high and low density pins. The turret head assembly and the universal head assembly are for different pins and applications and are not required.

Q: Do have to calibrate the crimper annually like we do with Multimeters etc

The crimper does not have to be calibrated annually but you can send the crimper back to the MFG for re-calibration and there will be a cost as well.

Q: I need a crimping tool for a M39029/64-369 pin, can you help identify what the correct tool would be?

The little blue crimper will work and you will also need the High density positioner 11-12212 with 11-04443.
