SPT Heavy Duty Dimmer With Off Switch

$229.95/Each
Part# 11-10606
MFR Model# SPTPWMHDS
DescriptionPart No.
HEAVY DUTY DIMMER WITH OFF SWITCH11-10606

Overview

Superior Panel Technology has developed three new, compact solid-state Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) dimmers to meet all aircraft dimming needs.

They are extremely easy to install (one terminal screw for power in, one for ground and the third for power out), minimal heat dissipation, and by choosing the right dimmer (EL/LED Dimmer, Heavy Duty or Extreme Heavy Duty) you avoid the “dimming steps” in brightness often found in other PWM dimmers.

SPT OFFERS AN INDUSTRY-LEADING 5 YEAR WARRANTY ON THEIR PWM DIMMERS!

Features

  • These dimmers have the smallest footprint on the market for a PWM dimmer with a switch.

Specifications

  • The EL/LED Dimmer would be used for LED’s and electroluminescent lighting such as SPT’s Glow Strips. This dimmer can be used for 14V -7 amps or 28V -3.5 amps.
  • The Heavy Duty is designed for incandescent lights and can be used for 14V-7 amps or 28V-3.5 amps
  • The Extreme Power Dimmer can be used for 14V-14 amps or 28V-7 amps.

Reviews

Works great. Used to dim NUlites and other instruments.

I have installed 4 of these units and love the size and performance. I did not have any issue with the terminal spacing. Jim Aircraft builder Pro Mechanic

Response from the manufacturer regarding review by Gary. We have reviewed Gary's comments regarding the SPT PWM dimmer and would like to make the following comments. 1. Yes, the screw terminals are closely spaced. This was done by design to allow the smallest footprint possible as space is always an issue on panels. We have the smallest footprint of any manufacturer of PWM dimmers that have a built-in circuit breaking switch. We have manufactured thousands of dimmers and we have never had a claim that one of our dimmers caused a short. 2. One change that we have made is that we now include insulated terminal rings. Gary received the earlier kit that provided heat shrink tubing and uninsulated rings. This works fine, however, the insulated rings eliminate that step of applying heat shrink. It is important , as the instructions clearly state in bold print, to only use the terminal rings (#6 with overall ring diameter no greater that 1/4) that are provided with the dimmer. 3. The terminal posts are securely fastened to the circuit board. For the terminals to short you would need to bend the rigid circuit board for them to touch. 4. SPT offers an industry leading 5 YEAR warranty on their PWM dimmers. Our product gives excellent dimming and we have not had any warranty claims (which is why we can confidently provide the 5 year warranty). Other manufacturers offer a one year warranty or less. 5. If there should be a warranty claim, we will provide a quick and free replacement. We also will send out at no cost, replacement terminal rings if they are damaged or lost during installation. Again, follow the instructions and shorts will not be an issue. Ken Whitaker Superior Panel Technology

Purchased this item and at first inspection it looks good, however, the terminals are so close together that I had no confidence that they would not short at some point. There isn't enough room between the terminals for a piece of heat shrink!!! By applying force I was able to insert some heat shrink between the terminals (this is using the extra small un-insulated terminal rings supplied). I then wrapped the entire terminal are in heat shrink. Bottom line is that the terminal layout is so poor that I don't think this should be used in an aircraft without some protection such as that mentioned above. G. Silver A & P, Avionics Technician

Q: Are these dimmers FAA Approved?

No, these dimmers are not FAA Approved.

Q: Can of these dimmers be used for Nulite non-led lighting?

Yes. Use part number 11-10606 for lights up to 100 watts.

Q: The dimmers that do not have an off switch, does that mean they do not have a separate off switch or that the switch is not off in the full counterclockwise position?

Superior Panel Technology makes dimmers with a built-in circuit breaking off switch (clicks off when turned fully in the counter clockwise position) and also one without a circuit breaking off switch. The lights will fully dim even on the one without an off switch, however, the circuitry is not fully dead. Some aircraft owners have a lighting master switch for their lighting dimmers which allows them to preset the light levels on multiple circuits and then simply flip the switch to turn them on. If you do not have a lighting master switch then it is recommended that you get the PWM dimmer that does have a circuit breaking off switch. Also, we suggest that you read the article "Choosing the Correct Dimmer". You can find the link by clicking on the Document tab.

Q: What are the dimensions of the PWM dimmers by SPT?

Base: 1.63" | Height: 1.88" | Width: 1"

Q: Is it legal to install this on a certified aircraft lighting system?

No, these dimmers are not FAA Approved.

Q: What is the Mfg that reference the 11-10604 part number?

SPTPWMLED

Q: Does the knob come with the PWM Dimmer?

Yes, the knob is included.

Q: What is the diameter of the threaded mounting stud?

5/16 inch.

Q: How many turns or degrees does the switch make from 0% to 100% ?

From initial "on" position to full bright, it is about 270 degrees.

Q: Does this dimmer support All three LED, EL, and incandescent Lighting?

The manufacturer just lists this for EL and LED only.
