27 Years +. Maule M5, Lycoming O-360-C1F. With side draft carb, this larger size made good use of available oil pan surface on this engine and worked well for me. Used consistently as only source of engine preheater for all cold starts +35F to -10F. 2-4 hours, depending on OAT with an engine blanket and prop cover brings oil temperature gauge to at least 100F. Still working when the oil pan was removed to fix a gasket leak and the preheater’s electrical cord connection to the heater pad was damaged. Heater was replaced with an identical new one.
Safe-Heet 720 Aircraft Engine Heater Kit
easy to install, and works great
Expensive, but worth it product. I use this in conjunction with a Hornet Heater to heat the top half of the engine, the temperature controller and a properly fitted, high quality engine tent. My test date was a brutal minus 40 Deg C night in Canada. With the device plugged in and left on medium high power, I gave it 8 hours before returning to check temperatures. The device had function checked after installation and when I put my hand down low as far as I could get it without taking the lower cowling off, I could feel heat radiating off of the device. The lower engine was cool to the touch, like touching a metal object in a room that is slightly cool. Nothing overly concerning. The engine turned over happily and oil pressure immediately shot up. Very happy with how it performs. They say with the heat controller on max you can achieve good temperatures in an hour. While I would never fly a 4 cylinder engine in minus 40, I would in minus 25, and I feel in those temps it would be best to leave the engine at least 3 hours with a means to heat the top half before attempting a start. I dont feel an hour is sufficient time to heat more than just the oil. The reason I gave it four stars is because of how the company handles manufacturing of their epoxy. Mine came with the epoxy expired and I had to call McFarlane directly to send a replacement (For free of course, props to their customer service). When I did, I learned that they manufacture their epoxy ONLY in January of every year. They rush to try and get out stuff with epoxy nearly expiring, and mine was two weeks expired when it arrived. One half was completely rock hard and the other was powder, totally unusable. The company needs to re-asses this tactic and perhaps manufacture a couple of times a year to avoid rushing out product with bad dates because they simply have no newer product to replace it. You can see another review here that states they had the same epoxy issue. I guess just dont buy it in December? Wait till February? Silly business tactic. Either way, if you get epoxy that is good, this thing does a fantastic job, just watch you dont buy it around Christmas like I did.
Great product, my only complaint is the epoxy in my box was rated to expore in just three weeks after purchase, and needs an engine temp of 70F to apply, which means I need to rather quickly access a heated hangar as it it 10F outside.
