Overview

Raychem's Solder Sleeve one-step, heat-shrinkable wire and cable interconnection devices are a labor saving alternative to conventional wire and cable termination methods such as craft-sensitive, time-consuming, hand soldering or crimping. The one-step terminators create strong, soldered connections. They consist of a heat-shrinkable sleeve and a premeasured, fluxed solder band. When heated, the tubing shrinks and the solder melts, making reliable, insulated terminations.

Work great. Simply insert two wires and hit it with a heat gun. The body act like shrink tubing while the center “donut” of solder melts. The melting point of the solder is well below the melting temperature of the sleeve, but above the shrink temperature by a lot. When the solder melting temperature is met, it flows quickly. And, it seems like the center, red band clears letting me know it is hot enough Raychem recommends using a J hook fitting on the heat gun to have an even heat. I don’t bother and just move the gun around. Make sure not to move the wires until the solder solidifies to avoid a cold solder joint or the wires pulling out The sleeve can shrink down to about 60% of its starting diameter Great way to splice in longer wires or transition from shield to a DB connector terminal

I use these a lot! A tad bit more trouble to use that the crimp kind but way more secure & nest looking too. Sometime I’ll slide a heat shrink sleeve over when I’m done just for extra peace of mind.

I am building an experimental. Just found these little sleeves and I think a great invention to assist in wiring the headphone jacks. adding the pigtails for grounding the tefzel shield

They work great, but do take quite a bit of heat to get the solder to melt.
