Sky-Tec Starter 12V 149Nl

September 17, 2024

I have only started my plane once since the new starter installation, but the starter engaged and turned the prop well. The best part of this new Sky-Tec starter design is it was 9lbs lighter than the starter it replaced.

Q: How much does this starter weigh?

9.5 lbs.

Q: What is the current draw of the 149-NL?

125-220A @ 110V, 140 RPM Test.

Q: What is the duty cycle on the 12V 149-NL? I can only find it for the NLec starters.

Do not crank for more than 10 seconds, and allow 20 seconds of cool down time in between attempts. Repeat up to 6 times then allow starter to cool for 30 minutes.

Q: Can this Sky Tec 149 NL be used for 24V?

No, the 24V version is Part # 08-07059.

Q: Is there a gasket used when mounting this starter or is it mounted metal to metal?

No this is mounted metal to metal.

Q: Do you accept the core of the old starter for a refund?

Yes, the starter that is being replaced with this unit should be returned for core credit.

Q: As a high torque starter, does it need more than a single #6 guage starter cable. My old prestolite needs two in parallel to crank my O-235

Per the vendor you would wire this in accordance with AC43-1B.

Q: Is this a new starter? If it is, why is there a core charge?

Yes, this is a new starter. A couple years ago Hartzell, the manufacturer of the Sky-tec line instituted core exchange charges on all new starters. It is refunded when an acceptable core is returned post sale.

Q: Are there any plastic gears in the 149-NL starter? Is this a permanent magnet starter or a series wound starter?

There are no plastic gears. Yes, this is a permanent magnet starter.

Q: Is the Sky Tec 149-NL STC paperwork and approval included?

No, this will include an 8130 form but the STC paperwork is online and you can download it from Hartzells website.
