Disappointed that my ~12 year old Zeftronics failed in an erratic reduced voltage output mode that created in flight operational issues. Zeftronics integrated green/red trouble light did not detect the issue. Wasted much time testing alternator and battery before replacing 12 year old Zeftronics regulator with a 20$ Ford regulator which confirmed that the good/green Zeftronics regulator was the problem. Spruce did great delivering a replacement quickly, but hoping my new Zeftronics proves to be more reliable than the 12 year old Zeftronics and the original Cessna/Ford mechanical regulators.

The voltage regulator bolts on directly with a good fit. The trouble shooting light indicator is a nice feature. The blades on the connectors are a bit thinner than the old regulator that it replaced, so the plug did not fit tightly. I had to crimp the plug connections to allow them to hold on to the blades.

There isn’t much to complain about this regulator. It’s quite a bit smaller than expected and rather light compared to the really old regulator this one replaced a pleasant surprise. Small, minor improvements could be made. The wire pigtails are a little short, another couple inches would be nice to give a little more slack and length for a service loop. The schematic and theory of operation concerning the OV light could contain more and better detail. Several warnings on the packaging caution against grounding the white wire. Presumably, the white wire could have buss voltage on it but that’s a guess since neither the schematic or instructions indicate if that’s the case. The white wire is supposed to turn on the OV light but there’s no information about what happens on the white wire. The rest of the documentation is OK which makes me wonder why the info about the OV indication is scant. Hopefully this new regulator will serve as long and as reliably as the old one. I’ll be fuzzy memory if it does.

I have not installed it yet as I ordered the Cessna P/N and then found out I needed the model with the built in OV protection that allows for the removal of the problematic OV module under the panel. Their is a 25% re-stocking fee if you open the box. Ironically it was the instruction sheets enclosed that made me realizr i needed the other model RV not R. I put a call in to Zeftronics to confirm that the model I failed to order was in fact what would work on my Cardinal 177RG. The tech was very cordial and knowledgeable. He sent me a pdf for referral so I could confirm what we believed was the correct unit to replace the original unit. I purchased via ACS and they are required to charge the 25% restocking fee that is plainly written on the Zeftronics box so be sure you order the correct unit for your desired option as there are two options and the ACS website will direct you to the replacement not the improved model that allows the elimination of the factory OV module.

I phone ordered a voltage regulator for a Grumman AA5A. You sent the wrong one. You don’t know it’s the wrong one until you break the seal to open the box. If you break the seal, it’s a 30% restocking charge, but you have to wait 3 o 4 months for Zeftronics to re-certify the unit before Aircraft Spruce will refund the $275. I went online & found the right one and it works.

I recently replaced my alternator and voltage regulator at the same time. I opted to go with the Zeftronics at the recommendation of other Mooney owners. I have a 1978 M20J. This VR was extremely simple to replace. The change out time took about 5 minutes. I did it myself and my A&P signed it off.

This is my second Zeftronics unit. The first one only lasted 13 months (12 month warranty from install and no leeway from their tech support on the warranty) and it replaced a 38 year old factory installed unit that my A&P recommended replacing to see if it was the cause of my electrical problems (it was not). Lets hope this one lasts longer than 13 months!

I have had Zeftronics voltage regulators on 2 prior aircraft and they worked great. When I needed to replace the VR on my F33A Bonanza I went to them for a replacement. Zeftronics showed a STC qualified replacement so I ordered it. Only then did I find out that their regulator required 2 field wires while the stock unit only needed 1. That was more than my mechanic wanted to get into for what should be a simple fix. Working through this issue with the Zeftronics tech support also proved difficult as it was very difficult to get anyone to answer the phone. I am sure the regulator would have worked great once installed, but on this airplane the installation was more difficult than one would expect.

This is the second time I’m getting a defective unit from the same manufacture. Overvoltage protection does not work again and almost made my Battery explode from overcharging. Unit was installed 100% correctly. I was told by a few A&Ps that this unit is finicky and NOT TO BUY IT AGAIN. I was told that the Plane Power Units are much better.

I never leave comments. But we I have ordered four or five of them in the last year. Three of them have not worked. Not worth your time and effort
