JPI’s newest piece of panel wizardry relegates fuel-situation questions to relics of the past. From its new home between the top row of flight instruments and the top of avionics stack, the FS-450 blinked and winked the numbers to answer all my fuel-situation questions.

Connected to our Honeywell Skymap IIIC, the FS-450 happily winked and blinked its way through its information inventory and left me as relaxed as any fat-dumb-and-happy aviator should get — minus the “dumb” part of the equation, of course. Heavy-duty information and a light-duty price; could you want more? Sure, easy installation would be nice, something JPI also covered.

Features

Fuel Used (USD):
How much fuel has been used since you last refueled. This number will always become larger as fuel is consumed. You can instead show the fuel used on a long multi-fuel stop flight and we will see later in this video how to do that.

Fuel remaining (REM):
How much total fuel remains in the aircraft. Only total fuel remaining in the aircraft is calculated.

Hours and minutes remaining (H.M.):
Based on the current fuel flow rate, displays the remaining endurance time. This parameter is most meaningful during cruise. During sea-level climb the fuel flow rate will be almost twice that of cruise and the endurance indication will be about half of actual. On the other hand, during a power reduction descent, the endurance will indicate more time than is actually available when flying at cruise power.

Fuel Required to Waypoint/ Destination (REQ):
This parameter will be displayed only if your EDM is receiving flight data from your GPS (this is a standard feature which is included with the Fuel Flow option). This will tell you how much fuel is required to get to the next waypoint or destination programmed on your GPS, based on your current fuel flow rate and present position.

Fuel Reserve (RES):
Fuel reserve when you arrive at your next waypoint. This parameter will be displayed only if your EDM is receiving flight data from your GPS (this is a standard feature which is included with the Fuel Flow option). This will tell you how much fuel reserve you can expect when you arrive at your next waypoint or destination programmed on your GPS, at the current fuel flow rate.

As of today I have not been able to get the FS-450 to work. After the install and it didnt work I contacted tech support who made me feel like I was some kind of ignorant moron. There suggestion was to blow through the transducer to see if the pulse wheel was spinning which it was. So what now? Well you can call the RMA department and get an RMA to send it back to be bench tested, DUH! After 15 emails back and forth with JPI RMA department I finally got the RMA and sent the transducer back. Im currently waiting a reply. Needless to say Im not impressed with JPI, especially Tech Support, and will not be doing business with them again.

Q: Does the JPI FS 450 GRAVITY FED (P/N: 10-00134) come with a FAA FORM 8130-3?

No, these do not come standard with an 8130-3 form. These must be requested at the time of order.

Q: Does the JPI FS 450 unit include the transducer?

Yes it does as you have to select gravity fed (231) or fuel pump (201) system.

Q: What is included with the J.P. Instruments Fuel Scan FS450? Is it compatible with a Cessna 182R?

Items included are the indicator, fire sleeve, harness, transducer and pilots guide. If you want to use it with your Cessna, you will need to use the gravity fed version (10-00134).

Q: I have a Cherokee 180 and wanted to add this to augment my fuel gauges. Can I install the FS450?

The manual describes the procedure for installing the Fuel Scan FS450 as a secondary gauge including the necessary placards you must include with the installation of the gauge.

Q: Which J.P. Instruments Fuel Scan FS 450 would work on a Cessna 150M?

For a Gravity Fed Fuel aircraft such as the Cessna 150 series you would need part number 10-00134.

Q: Does the FS450G have the flow labelled in Gal/Hr on the gauge, or is the label units/hr?

The JPI Fuel Scan FS450 is programmable to either gallons, pounds or liters.

Q: I have the EI Red Cube transducer fitted. Is that compatible with the JPI FS 450?

The recommended transducers are listed for the FS450 in the installation manual by JPI. Using another manufacturer’s transducer is not recommended or tested.

Q: Is there a wiring harness available for the FS 450 transducer to indicator?

For the fuel scan FS450, part numbers 10-00135 and 10-00134, the harness is included with the instrument.
