Overview

Note: Unit is intended for experimental aircraft. 337 field approval for certified aircraft would be required.

The ALFI (Aircraft LED Flasher Interface) employs the LED's ability to be rapidly flashed to serve in the role of collision avoidance. Intended for continuous inflight use of your aircraft's LED exterior illumination lights, the ALFI system produces flashing sequences that randomly change each two to five seconds, resulting in a highly visible, attention retaining collision avoidance lighting environment from lights previously devoted to illumination.

As an illumination appliance the LED is indeed pricey...but, as a potentially life saving collision avoidance tool, it is...priceless!

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 3-1/4" x 4-1/4" x 1-1/2"
  • Weight: 8oz.
  • Available for installation on Experimental aircraft only.
  • Lights not included
  • Voltage: 12Volts or 24 Volts

System Requirements

  • The first consideration: Is your aircraft's electrical system 12 or 24 volts? Secondly: How many installed LED lights will be powered by the system? Lastly: How many switches are installed and to which lights?
  • Each ALFI system is accompanied by detailed installation instructions based on the requirements of each aircraft lighting system and instructions for continued airwothiness (ICA) are included in anticipation of timely approval for a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) and/or Part Manufacturing Approval (PMA).

Reviews

I wrote the 2-light model ALFI review a year ago here. So I just added another ALFI to my other aircraft with 4 LED lights (two taxi and two landing, one pair in each wing). The ALFI is a really easy way to add Wig-Wag without having to use a proprietary wiring scheme found in some of the more expensive models of the same LED assembly brand. This makes it ever valuable to a retrofit situation since an additional wire doesnt have to be run out on the wing like those mentioned proprietary lights with built-in wig-wag. Everything is accomplished behind the instrument panel. These ALFIs should be on everybodys list who has more than one LED landing or taxi lights on their aircraft and want a simple and easy way to add wig-wag / recognition lights.

The ALFI works great. This is a really easy way to add recognition lights to your landing and taxi LED bulbs. I combined the two-circuit model ALFI with one each AERO LED 36 landing and taxi lights. My original switch for these lights is a three way affair with center off, up for taxi and down for landing. I only had to add a single SPST toggle switch for the ALFI and wire per instructions. So now if the original toggle switch is off (center position) and the ALFI is switched on both lights flash in recognition mode. With the ALFI on, if the original switch selects either landing or taxi on the selected bulb is constant on with the other bulb still flashing. With the ALFI switch off the system acts just like original like the ALFI doesnt exist. The random patterns and alternating flashing is really a great way to get attention (the whole purpose of this product). Thanks ALFI.

Q: Does the ALFI LED Flasher Interface work with standard taxi/landing lights?

Per the manufacturer, the Alfi LED flasher interface is designed to only work with LED lights.

Q: Does the ALFI work with standard taxi / landing lights?

No, ALFI is designed and limited to use with LED illumination lights only. Filament based lights are much higher amperage and are incapable of the rapid flash rates produced by the ALFI.

Q: what amperage will all four in series take?

The circuit breaker required for 4 lights is 5 amps.

Q: Is this unit able to be installed in a certified aircraft? Can I use this in a Cessna 150 with a LED landing light and two LED wingtip lights?

No, as the FAA/PMA approval is still pending. Since it is currently experimental, you would have to get a 337 field approval for it to be installed on a Cessna aircraft.
