Glass Upgrade for DG/HSI and Attitude Instruments in GA Aircraft

  • Replaces traditional electromechanical instruments; can be configured in attitude, DG/HI/HSI and turn coordinator positions

  • Bright, sunlight-readable 3.5” LCD color display, sized to fit standard 3-1/8” instrument cutout

  • Certified via approved model list (AML) for STC’d installation on more than 560 aircraft makes and models

  • Includes a 4-hour backup battery with battery status indicator

  • Dual G5 installation offers reversionary display capability plus the added redundancy of dual ADAHRS and dual backup batteries
The G5 electronic flight instrument delivers exceptional performance, reliability and ease of installation as a drop-in replacement for primary attitude and/or directional gyros in type-certificated fixed-wing aircraft. Providing an economical upgrade path via a comprehensive approved model list (AML), the compact and cost-effective G5 is bringing modern “glass cockpit” reference to thousands of aircraft that would otherwise depend on older, vacuum-driven equipment.

Affordable Glass Solution
Designed for installation in FAR Part 23 Class 1 and Class 2 aircraft (singles and twins weighing less than 6,000 lbs), the 3.5” G5 display fits into a standard 3-1/8” round cutout, taking up just a fraction of the space and weight previously required by conventional gyro-based instruments. It’s valid for flight under VFR and IFR conditions. And, by combining visual cues and data readouts once scattered across a myriad of instruments, G5 makes flight information easier to scan — so pilots can respond more quickly and intuitively to any inflight situation.
Rock-solid Attitude Reference
When configured as a primary attitude indicator, G5 uses solid-state AHRS reference to provide smooth, steady and reliable horizon-based pitch and roll indications. In addition to aircraft attitude, G5 will also support display of airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, slip/skid, turn rate, configurable V-speed references, barometric setting and selected altitude — as well as visual alerts upon arriving at a preselected altitude. A built-in GPS receiver provides highly accurate groundspeed and ground track readouts. Plus, a dedicated rotary knob on the unit allows for easy adjustments to altitude bugs and barometric pressure settings.
Gain A Clearer Sense of Direction
To provide even more situational awareness, G5 is also approved for installation as a replacement heading indicator/directional gyro (HI or DG) or horizontal situation indicator (HSI) in your panel. When paired with an affordable GMU 11 magnetometer, GAD™ 29D navigation data interface and select VHF Nav/Comms or GPS navigators, G5 can serve as your primary reference source for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and/or GPS course guidance — as well as providing distance and groundspeed indications. The unit displays both vertical and lateral GPS/VOR/LOC course deviation when available. And you can use the G5 instrument’s rotary knob to easily make and adjust course selections — or to control heading bug settings in DG installations. For added system integration, a single magnetometer can supply heading information to 2 G5 units simultaneously.
Dual Displays Double Your Options
By installing dual G5 displays in your panel, you not only gain dedicated instruments for attitude reference and directional gyro/HSI guidance, but you also gain the advantages of backup redundancy with dual ADAHRS and reversionary display capability. In such installations, a secondary G5 can revert to display attitude information (consolidated with heading indication) in the unlikely event of a failure in the primary attitude indicator position. For added “get home” protection, each G5 display is available with a backup lithium-ion battery, which can provide up to 4 hours of emergency operation in case of an aircraft electrical outage or shutdown.
Learn More About G5
With supplemental type certification (STC) provided under an AML covering hundreds of certificated GA aircraft models, a G5 upgrade for your cockpit offers maximum capability and value for minimal downtime, paperwork and expense. You can select from an array of approved installation configurations incorporating single or dual G5 displays. And no matter which installation you choose, you’ll be flying with the peace of mind that comes with our industry-leading Garmin warranty backed by our No. 1-ranked product support team. See your authorized Garmin installation center for more details on the G5 glass upgrade for your aircraft.

Third-party Autopilot Support
The G5 electronic flight instrument is now compatible with a wide-range of third-party autopilots available on the market. Utilizing the new GAD 29D adapter, the G5 directional gyro (DG)/horizontal situation indicator (HSI) can interface with a variety of autopilots to provide heading and course error from G5 to drive the autopilot. With a compatible navigation source, G5 can also interface with select autopilots for coupled flight in heading and navigation modes. Additionally, when interfaced with a GTN 650/750 or GNS 430W/530W, the G5 can provide GPSS roll steering navigation from the navigator to the autopilot. Pilots can simply select GPSS on the G5 and heading mode on the autopilot and the autopilot will fly smooth intercepts, holding patterns, procedure turns and more.

Be advised! G5 HSI kits are now shipping with a GAD 29D. ARINC data will not work unless you update the G5s to software 7.3 (which can be found on Garmins website).

@Chris G. - may I ask you for a email to you ? I just finished installation of DualG5, GNS430WAAS and Stec55X and still receiving GPSS FAIL, when I want to switch AP into GPSS mode. GPS mode selected and FPL active in GNS430W, but immediately after NAV button on STEC55X is pressed twice, GPSS FAIL will display. All setup parameters of the G5s, GNS etc. I checked twice, everything is according to the manuals. My avionics shop didnt know... Many thanks

This review is in comment to Steve Bs negative review. I have installed dozens of G5s. They just work and when they dont, an installation error occurred. I have installed a Dual set coupled with a STEC 55X. There is a heading bug and the A/P tracks the nav information. The instructions are vary specific about the configuration of the 55x controller. If you are not getting the information, reach out to myself or someone who is familiar with iinstalling these units. It sounds like a setting or configuration was not properly done.

Highly recommend. The impetus for us buying and self installing this (under our IAs supervision) was we needed a Nav Indicator for our GNX 375 GPS / Transponder. We were considering a used KI 209 but really felt as though spending a little more and getting a LOT more was the right move and Im happy we went this route. We also opted for the GTP 59 / GAD 13 temperature probe. Not only is it nice for ice-avoidance, but it also enables TAS and X-Wind information. Mounting the GMU 11 Magnetometer was probably the trickiest part of the installation. We had to build a shelf, run an interference test, fish wires through to the wingtip, level the aircraft according to our service manual and mount the GMU 11 *just* right. Its not easy and I can easily see why shops charge what they do! Overall, extremely pleased with the product.

Steve B writes that there is no heading bug pickup. That is patently false. The photos even show the bug. Anyhow, I have both the G5 HSI and PFD installed. I cant say enough nice things about them. They just work. Not too cluttered, not to sparse, intuitive. I have a fairly popular youtube video up showcasing both. Search for: DUAL Garmin G5 HSI & PFD In Flight Demo - 430W & STEC 30 Autopilot

Just received a G5 HSI with the new GAD29B (the one designed to interface with autopilots). Installation is straight forward, but not simple. The additional pneumatic plumbing and CAN bus cabling is in addition to what you would normally need for an HSI and requires some extra thought. There are lots of instructions for testing associated with power, vibration and interference that need to be properly adhered to but are pretty straight forward and not hard to pass. The connectors remain the same for the 29B as for the regular GAD29 so people who used the 29 for ARINC429 interfacing can simply swap to a 29B and add a couple of wires to interface to an autopilot. The unit comes with all the connectors you will need for the install, just add wire. I am particularly impressed with the quality of the backshells. They are easy to assemble and sturdy. Documentation is thorough and easy to understand. In this day and age, there is no longer a reason to risk flying behind old style spinning gyros when modern electronic replacements like these are available at these prices. The G5 and GFC 500 is going to breathe life into thousands of old airframes that were previously not economical to upgrade.

Q: I know the STC for the Garmin G5 to be used as a primary HSI has now been approved. Will the G5 co figured for HSI receive glideslope input from a King KX 155 and will the WAAS position source for an Aparreo Stratus work with the G5 for a non-GPS equipped aircraft?

Per Garmin, the G5 will not interface with the KX 155. The G5 has an internal GPS which can be used with an external antenna or can receive GPS data from a GTN or GNS GPS source.

Q: Will the G5 HSI heading bug drive a STEC 50 autopilot in heading mode?

Yes, the STC'd G5 HSI now has the capability to drive an autopilot system. Supported autopilot systems are listed on our web page.

Q: Can this G5 act as primary for Attitude Indicator, Directional Gyro, and Turn Coordinator, HSI and Secondary for airspeed, altitude, vsi?

This G5 is only STC'd as a primary replacement for the directional gyro. It is locked in the DG screen and cannot display any other information.

Q: Our aircraft already has the Dynon D-10A EFIS installed. Is there any problems or loss of capability integrating the G5 DG/HSI into our system? NOTE: we will be connecting our GTN-750 as the GPS source.

We are not aware of any capability issues with these units and their integration.

Q: Will the Garmin G5 DG display Glide Slope from a GNC255A?

Yes, this unit will display glide slope information from a gnc255a.

Q: If I install two G5s, will the heading bugs move together when set by either knob? That is, the one on the G5 AI or the one on the G5 DG.

At this time no, as Garmin does not show the two units tied together in the install manual.

Q: Does the Garmin G5 show glide slope (vertical guidance) from a GTN650 during an approach with vertical guidance?

Per Garmin, yes, the Garmin G5 HSI will display vertical guidance during approach.

Q: What other parts will I need to buy so the Garmin G5 will work as a HSI coupled with a GNS 430 NON WAAS?

Per the G5 installation manual, the G5 DG/HSI will work with the GNS 4xx/5xx with either WAAS or non-WAAS. You will require the use of a GAD29B and GMU11 if you intend to use G5 for VHF navigation.

Q: The comment about the G5 DG/HSI not working with a GNS-430 non-WAAS is a little confusing. Two press releases say it works but you have to have GAD-29B too. Can you clarify this? Thank you.

Per the G5 installation manual, the G5 DG/HSI will work with the GNS 4xx/5xx with either WAAS or non-WAAS. You will require the use of a GAD29B and GMU11 if you intend to use G5 for VHF navigation.

Q: Is there a non certified version of the G5 HSI like there is a non certified version of the G5 ADI/EFIS? The G5 Efis says it has an HSI mode so would that basically be this unit w/o the cert paperwork? Thanks KM

The experimental G5 has the ability to switch between the AI/EFIS and HSI page using the control knob on the unit. The STC'd units are locked in either the AI or HSI, respectively.
